overview

This Saturday course is an introduction to the principles of pattern cutting for fashion. This course will be suitable for you if you are interested in starting to design and make your own clothing, or you are preparing a portfolio for entry to a degree course to pursue your career. You will also have fun if you like the precise nature of the mathematical and 3D engineering challenge. You will be taught by a professional who will demonstrate the methods, measurements and tools for drafting, constructing and cutting the basic garment blocks. You will learn how the patterns can be adapted to develop various design variations of your choice.

You will learn about dart manipulation, facings and add some design details such as pockets and waistbands. By the end of the 10 unit course you should be able to make complete paper patterns according to industry production sample requirements for simple skirts, bodice tops, shirts, trousers and a day dress. If you do not have machine sewing skills this course can be taken in conjunction with evening ‘Sewing Sessions’ in our workshops to help you realise your patterns into prototype garments.
