Fashion Styling

The Condé Nast Fashion Styling Program will give students an opportunity to learn from established fashion professionals and experiment with contemporary ideas in an exciting creative field that embodies both art direction and photography. The program is suitable for a variety of levels, ranging from the fashion-aware arts graduate to the enthusiast currently working in visual or fashion merchandising. It is taught over a three month period by our distinguished, internationally sourced guest lecturers, and our renowned Condé Nast team. Selected work from students will be exhibited in our gallery and presented on the website to an international audience.

 

The Fashion Styling program has developed a creative approach to respond to clients, editorial and advertising briefs, as well as encouraging an individual style. The program incorporates a balanced program of lectures, hands-on styling exercises, critiques, team projects, and self-directed ventures will deepen your understanding of the competitive global fashion media, as well as the Chinese and Asian markets.

-You will have photographic proof of work you have done in styling or conceptualising a ‘look’ or collection in a portfolio of ideas or images to show the admissions panel.

-Chinese Proficiency: Sufficient to understand lessons and participate in group discussion and presentations.

Units cover key aspects of fashion styling for men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, beauty, and celebrity appearances in print and digital fashion media. Your visual knowledge will be enriched by increasing your understanding of the concepts, editors, photographers, models and stylists behind iconic images. You will see how a magazine works by scrutinizing the roles of the art director, pre-production planning, photographer and effects of text and typography.

 

Through execution of practical projects, you will gain insight into the research, design, and planning that goes into coordinating a fashion shoot for editorial and commercial projects. You will learn how effective communications between agents, photographers, and stylists enable you to get the right ‘look’, hair, and make-up for the target market and media. Students of the Fashion Styling program will be working closely with the Fashion Photography students, and relevant modules will be taken together.

    This is a part-time introductory short course, it initiates you to the principles of life drawing and expressive fashion illustration from the model. The main elements of focus are dynamic shape, volume, color and texture in the expression of materials and drape interacting with the pose. Students will become familiar with the use of colored markets, watercolor pencil and pastels for the illustrations.
